The Boyana Lake was created artificially during the construction of the Sofia Vitosha water pipeline. Before it was a swamp, fed by several springs.
Today it is important habitat on a number of Amphibians types such as the brown toad, great water frog, small and large crested newt. The presence of these species gives special value to Lake Boyana, as they are among the objects of conservation of the European Natural Heritage.
