Torfeno Branishte is a reserve located in Vitosha National Park. It was declared a reserve with a total area of 785.3 hectares in 1935. Initially it occupied a much smaller area (about 144.1 hectares, the same area as the Upper Marsh), but this area was increased to nearly 785.3 hectares in 1980. The purpose of the reserve is to preserve the peat complexes in the high parts of Vitosha in their natural state.
The thickness of the peat cover reaches up to 2 metres in places. The age of the peatland is over 1000 years. There are no forests in the area. The peat cover grows relatively slowly - by 1 mm per year.
