Black Peak is the highest point of Vitosha. Its altitude is 2290 m, which ranks Vitosha fourth highest among the Bulgarian mountains. There is a meteorological station on the summit, built in 1935 - shortly after Vitosha was declared a national park, the first such on the Balkan Peninsula. From the top you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Sofia field, the Balkan Mountains and Rila.
Cherni Vrah is among the Hundred National Tourist Sites of the BTS and has a special place in the history of the Bulgarian tourist movement. It is its ascent, held on August 27, 1895 on the initiative of the writer Aleko Konstantinov, that is considered the birth date of organized tourism and of the Bulgarian Tourist Union (BTS).
